Rubber Flooring Cleaning & Care
Rubber Flooring Cleaning & Care Guidance
Keep Pro Sports Floors gym floors looking sharp with simple care. This hub covers daily, weekly and deep cleaning for rolled rubber, confetti rolls and interlocking rubber tiles sold on rubberflooringrolls.com, for home gyms and commercial facilities alike. It is general guidance - always check the care notes for your specific product.
Daily cleaning
For most gym floors, sweep or dust-mop first to lift grit, then mop with warm water and a light solution of mild dish soap or a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh solvents that can dry or dull the rubber surface.
Weekly and deep cleaning
- Damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner suited to rubber, then let the floor air-dry fully before heavy use.
- Large commercial floors: an auto-scrubber with soft pads and a rubber-safe neutral cleaner works well - skip aggressive stripping pads.
- Interlocking tiles: use a damp mop, not a soaking one, so water does not sit in the seams. On glued-down rolls, avoid flooding the seams too.
What to avoid
- Oil-based, petroleum or solvent cleaners (for example acetone or mineral spirits) - they can soften or discolor rubber. The roll manufacturer specifically warns that petroleum-based cleaners damage recycled rubber.
- Bleach and strong acid or alkaline cleaners.
- Wax, furniture polish or silicone sprays that leave a slippery film.
- Long or repeated ozone-generator sessions to chase new-floor smell - heavy ozone exposure can damage recycled rubber. Fresh air and fans are the safer fix.
New-floor rubber odor
New recycled rubber flooring often has a noticeable smell at first. Unroll or unbox it in a ventilated space, keep air moving, and wash it with a mild neutral solution - the odor usually fades with time and airflow.
Storing rolls before install
Good care starts before the floor goes down. Keep rolls clean, dry, and off damp slabs, ideally somewhere around 70-90 F, and keep fuel, solvents, and oil-based products away from them. On install day, let the rolls lie flat 12-24 hours to relax before trimming. Full steps are in How to Install Rolled Rubber Flooring, and glue-down prep is on the Adhesives hub checklist.
Sealer & equipment notes
Some facilities apply a compatible top-coat sealer on rolled rubber or Everlock-style interlocking tiles. Floor cleaning machines can help on large commercial areas - match pads and chemicals to rubber flooring, not stone or wood.
FAQ: Rubber gym floor care
How often should I clean a rubber gym floor? Home gyms usually do fine with a weekly sweep and a damp-mop as needed. Busy commercial gyms should sweep or dust-mop daily and damp-mop or scrub several times a week.
Does confetti (color fleck) rubber need different care? No - the same sweep plus neutral-cleaner routine works for 5/16" (8mm) confetti, 3/8" confetti and black rolls.
